Herbal Treatments for ADD & ADHD

ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder) are characterized by difficulty staying focused, being easily distracted and, in the case of ADHD, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. These disorders are caused by problems with brain development and can be exacerbated by diet, chemicals or other environmental factors. There are some common herbal remedies that may help control symptoms.

Valerian Root

Valerian root is an herbal sedative. It is calming and has a tranquillizing effect on the body. According to the Clayton College of Natural Health Herb Guide, it has anti-convulsive, hypotensive, tranquilizing, neurotropic and anti-aggressive properties. It can be used to suppress and regulate the autonomic nervous system. It also is used by herbalists to treat childhood hyperactivity with few or no side effects. Because valerian root is sedative, it is especially beneficial for ADHD sufferers who have difficulty sleeping.

Gingko Biloba

Gingko is a Chinese herb used to treat a variety of conditions, including cerebral vascular insufficiency, dementia, depression, impotence, inner ear dysfunction, multiple sclerosis, neuralgia and neuropathy and even premenstrual syndrome. It increases blood flow to the brain and dilates the blood vessels. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that preliminary studies suggest that American ginseng, in combination with ginkgo, may help treat ADHD.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is another calming herb. It is used by herbalists to treat insomnia, minor headaches, nervousness, anxiety, arrythmias and heart palpatations. It sometimes is found in herbal blends along with gingko, chamomile and gotu kola as a natural remedy for ADD and ADHD. It helps reduce feelings nervousness, panic, restlessness and irritability. It may be beneficial for children with ADD or ADHD who have difficulty adjusting to school or new surroundings.

German Chamomile

German chamomile (not to be confused with Roman chamomile) is naturally calming. It often is used to treat children suffering from nervousness, anxiety or irritability. It is very gentle and helps to calm the nerves. It works best when combined with other herbs, such as lemon balm and gingko biloba. In a study published in the "Australian Journal of Medical Herbalism," Matricaria chamomilla (also known as German chamomile) was found to produce an improvement in ADHD symptoms comparable to conventional medical treatment, but with fewer side effects. Researchers also felt German chamomile could help augment the effects of conventional treatments, such as medication.

Gotu Kola

Gotu kola often is included in natural weight loss products because it helps increase energy levels. However, it does not contain caffeine. Instead, it is a neural tonic and helps to combat stress. It is used by herbalists to treat diseases of the nervous system and improve memory. It may be especially beneficial for those with ADD and ADHD who struggle with learning and focusing their attention either in a class setting or independently.
