The belts in taekwondo indicate a student's gradual progression in learning the martial art. The belt is an important symbol of your hard work and dedication. Not only does it represent your rank and skill level, but it can even be used as a weapon to block attacks and execute joint locks on an opponent. Because your belt is an essential part of your taekwondo training, one of the first things you will learn is how to tie the belt properly.
Step 1
Find the middle of the belt and place it just under your navel. To ensure that the ends of the belt will be even, slide the belt a few inches to the left to make the left side longer than the right.
Step 2
Wrap both sides of the belt around your back and bring them to the front. The left side should go over the right so that they don't cross at the back.
Step 3
Push the left end of the belt under the two layers just below your navel and pull it out the top. Pull down on the right end of the belt as you pull up on the left until the belt is tight. When you hold the two ends in front of you, the left end should be about two inches longer.
Step 4
Cross the left end over the right. Push it under and through to complete the knot. Pull both ends of the belt to tighten. The two ends should be even lengths.
Tips and Warnings
- Taekwondo schools vary as to which side your name should appear when the belt is tied. Begin Step 1 with your name on the left side to end with your name on the right, and vice versa.
