Pumice stones are composed of igneous rock formed from molten lava. They are lightweight, porous and rough, and their texture is similar to sandpaper. This makes pumice stones ideal for wearing away calluses, particularly on your feet. The rough texture gradually wears away the excess skin of a callus. But knowing how to use this product is essential to avoid injury. Pumice stones used in the wrong way can cause injuries and friction burns on your skin.

Step 1

Soak your foot in water, or use the pumice stone when you are fresh from the shower or a swimming pool. Pumice stones work best on soft skin.

Step 2

Gently scrub the pumice stone on your callus. Be careful not to apply excessive pressure, and do not scrub until all the skin is gone--this will increase your risk of developing a blister or other injury. Only wear away the excess skin buildup.

Step 3

Apply a moisturizing lotion to your skin after using the pumice stone. This will help keep your skin healthy and moist, guarding you from dry and irritated skin resulting from the pumice stone.
