Lavender is a flower native to many parts of the United States, particularly the plains and prairies of the Midwest. It is best-known as a subtle fragrance frequently used in soaps, shampoos and air fresheners. However, lavender also has applications as an herbal remedy for many ailments, including insomnia, depression, anxiety and fatigue. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that research confirms lavender's ability to calm, soothe and sedate individuals when the scent is inhaled.

Step 1

Place 2 to 4 drops into 2 to 3 cups of boiling water, and then inhale the vapors to help treat headaches, depression or insomnia.

Step 2

Mix lavender essential oils together with a base oil at a ratio of 1 to 4 drops of lavender oil for every tablespoon of almond or olive oil. Apply it to eczema, acne or dry, scaly skin, one time daily to help relieve your skin of its ailments. You can also mix it with chamomile when treating eczema.

Step 3

Leave a small container of essential oils uncovered--or drip lightly onto potpourri--to use as an air freshener. Its use as an aromatic is most effective when thin reed sticks are placed into the small container, allowing the oil to travel up the reeds and diffuse into the air.

Step 4

Dab small amounts of lavender essential oil onto wrinkles, psoriasis, wounds, cuts and minor burns.

Step 5

Put lavender oil into your hair and let the oil sit for several minutes to treat lice in your hair.

Things You'll Need
