Acupressure is an ancient Chinese treatment closely related to acupuncture. It uses pressure points in your body to promote health and treat ailments and disease. There is little scientific evidence supporting the use of acupressure and Western medicine does not regard it highly, according to VS2Health.com, but there are nurmerous resources to receive acupressure and even learn how to do it yourself. DrBenKim.com recommends providing acupressure on your own body at several important points to promote good health.
Step 1
Press or squeeze each pressure point with your fingers and/or thumbs, on both sides of the point when possible. Press and gently massage for two to three minutes twice a day. Apply enough pressure that it becomes slightly uncomfortable and achy.
Step 2
Apply direct pressure with your thumb the the soft meat of your hand near the webbing between your thumb and index finger on each hand. This is the LI-4 spot and corresponds to a muscular branch of the median nerve according to traditional Chinese anatomy. Applying pressure to these spots can stimulate these parts of your body and break up any disease located in them.
Step 3
Squeeze the flesh between your big toe and index toe. This location is connected to nerves throughout your foot and is called the Liver 3 or LR-3 point.
Step 4
Press firmly on the location roughly three finger-widths above the inner ankle on either foot. There should be calf muscle in this region to apply acupressure to. Called the Spleen 6 or SP-6 point, this point corresponds to nerves and arteries in the tibia along with motor-function nerves.
Tips and Warnings
- Treat a wider range of points by obtaining a pressure point chart or book.
- Use acupressure as a supplement to medical attention and treatment, not an alternative.
