Rugby is a physically challenging team sport, which involves running, passing and kicking. Although it is similar to American football, there are significant differences in the rules which make rugby a very unique game.

Logistics

A rugby field is approximately the size of a soccer field, slightly longer and wider than a football field. The standard size of the field is 110 yards long and 75 yards wide. There are two end zones, each located on opposite sides of the field behind the goalposts, ranging from 10 to 22 meters long. The goalposts are H shaped and are on the goal line. Teams are allowed to have 15 players on the field at once. The rugby ball is made of leather or another synthetic material for enhanced grip. The ball is oval in shape and cannot have laces.

Game Rules

Rugby games begin with a kickoff, as one team kicks the ball to the opposing team. After the kickoff, teams go back and forth attempting to move the ball toward the opponent's end zone. Rugby rules dictate three ways of moving the ball: passing, running and kicking. Players can pass the ball to other teammates but can only pass the ball backward or laterally. You can run with the ball until you are tackled or forced out of bounds. Additionally, you are allowed to kick the ball forward. At any time, an opposing team can gain possession and move the ball in the opposite direction.

Scoring

In rugby, there are four ways of scoring. A player with possession of the ball can run into the opposing team's end zone to score five points. Following this, a team can gain two extra points by converting a kick, in which a player kicks the ball through the goalposts from 10 meters away. Another way to score points is from a drop kick. During play, a player can attempt to kick the ball through the goalpost from any spot on the field. However, the ball must first hit the ground before it can be hit. A successful drop kick is worth three points. The final way of scoring is a penalty kick. After a foul by an opposing team, the offensive team can try a penalty kick, in which they can attempt to kick the ball through the goalpost from the spot of the foul. A penalty kick is also worth three points.
