One of the most important benefits of aerobic exercise and fitness is a stronger heart, the Mayo Clinic says. The heart is a muscle and must be exercised regularly for optimal function. Strong and healthy hearts don't need to work as hard or beat as fast as weaker hearts. Strong heart function enables the heart to more efficiently pump blood-enriched oxygen to all cells in the body.

Weight Maintenance

Aerobic activities help burn calories, reducing the amount of fat that accumulates on the body, the Mayo Clinic says. Aerobic activity done on a regular basis, three to five times a week, helps increase metabolism (the speed at which the body burns fat or calories for fuel). The higher a person's metabolism, the faster the body processes fat, leading to faster weight loss and weight management.

Improved Mood

Exercise promotes and enhances the release of endorphins found in the brain, which help elevate mood. These "feel-good hormones" act as natural pain killers, says the Mayo Clinic, as well as promoting a sense of well-being in people.

Improved Circulation

Aerobic activity helps get the blood pumping, which improves circulation. Oxygen-rich blood pumping to all areas of the body provides essential nutrients as well, encouraging optimal organ function, says Healthline. Adequate circulation, in turn, reduces the chance of clogged arteries, regulated blood pressure and decreased risk of heart disease and heart attack and stroke.

Increased Fitness Levels

Aerobic activities increase fitness levels and the ability to engage in higher-intensity exercise, says the American Heart Association. Such activity offers positive benefits for heart disease prevention and reduces levels of bad cholesterol in the blood that often lead to clogged arteries or decreased heart function. Even those who have experienced heart attacks or are experiencing various forms of heart disease or conditions may improve cardiac health and increase cardiac function through aerobic exercise and activities.
