Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body develops a resistance to the effects of insulin or when the production of insulin by the pancreas is insufficient, according to the Mayo Clinic. This results in a high blood glucose level (hyperglycemia). The goal in treating diabetes is to control the blood glucose level through diet, exercise and medications (if needed). An alternative or adjunct approach is the use of herbal supplements such as ginseng, psyllium or milk thistle.
Ginseng
Ginseng, a traditional Chinese herb, has been used to treat diabetes for many years. Ginseng is also known to improve strength, stamina and athletic performance. There are two kinds of ginseng, Asian and American, both of which may help to lower blood sugar levels. However, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the ginsenosides in American ginseng might lower blood sugar, while the different ginsenosides in Asian ginseng may raise blood sugar levels. The University of Maryland Center recommendations that, until more is known, individuals with diabetes should not take ginseng without the strict supervision and monitoring of a professional health care provider.
Psyllium
Psyllium is an over-the-counter, soluble fiber, derived from a plant native to India. It's commonly found in bulk laxatives and fiber supplement powder or wafers. Psyllium may be used to treat constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Psyllium benefits individuals with diabetes by improving blood glucose levels and lowering blood cholesterol.
Milk Thistle
Milk thistle is obtained from the seed, pod or fruit of the plant Silymarin, found around the Mediterranean Sea area. The active ingredient in milk thistle is silybinin. According to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, milk thistle is known for its effects in treating conditions of the liver such as cirrhosis, hepatitis and drug-induced hepatotoxicity as well as for its benefits as a supplement in improving the blood glucose and glycemic results of patients with type 2 diabetes.
Considerations
Individuals with diabetes should be under the medical care and supervision of a professional health care provider. Before taking any herbal products, discuss with a physician about any medication being taken, a history of any medical conditions or allergies. This will avoid drug interactions or taking a product that's contraindicated to a past or current medical condition.
