Maintaining a good skin complexion can make you look younger and healthier. Many creams and lotions are available in stores to help keep your skin youthful. There are also things you can do for your skin, including keeping a good diet, avoiding dryness, using sunblock and keeping skin clean. Following those rules will help you avoid skin problems like blemishes and wrinkles.

Healthy Diet

A healthy diet is good for your body and your skin. The addition of vitamins may help if you don't have a diet rich in fruit and vegetables. Vitamin D--especially in the winter when you aren't getting it from the sun--is good for the complexion. Vitamins C and E can reverse sun damage, while vitamin C may also boost collagen. Vitamin A, which you can also apply topically as Retin A, can also help keep skin youthful.

Sunblock

Sunblock is a must if you want a good skin complexion. UVA and UVB rays from the sun can damage skin regardless of the season, making it appear older and drier. Moisturizer and makeup products are available that protect the skin from the sun. Look for sun protection products that contain UVA protection and an SPF of at least 15. If you are going to be in direct sun, wear a hat and sunglasses for more blockage of the sun's harmful rays.

Hydration

British dermatologist Nick Lowe, M.D., believes the winter can be even worse for the skin than the summer since cold temperatures, wind and exposure to indoor heating systems can dry the skin. Skin needs to be hydrated from the inside and the outside for a good complexion. Drink plenty of fluids, preferably water over sugar-filled drinks. Be sure to moisturize often and don't use a soap with chemical ingredients that may dry skin even more.

Cleaning

You must keep your skin clean if you want a good complexion. Avoid touching your skin, as your hands and nails could contain dirt and bacteria. Never go to sleep with makeup on your face, as the dirt and oil mixed in will remain on your face all night. Look for a gentle cleanser or makeup remover. A microdermabrasion treatment--either with an at-home kit or at a dermatologist's office--will give your skin a deep cleaning.
