Reiki is a form of spiritual healing that utilizes the energy of the practitioner to affect healing, report specialists at the International Association of Reiki Professionals. Reiki is not massage and typically does not rely on any pressure applications, just light touching. It is not a religious practice nor does it rely on certain beliefs to be effective.
Step 1
Sit your client in a comfortable reclining chair or have your client lie down on a sofa or bed to begin the treatments. Many Reiki masters prefer to use massage tables because they are raised and provide easy access to the various body parts. Clients also can lie on their stomachs and breathe through the hole provided on a massage table.
Step 2
Leave the client fully clothed. Reiki does not rely on physical contact to transfer the energy through the body.
Step 3
Place your hands over the client's eyes to begin transferring the energy from your hands to the patient. Beginning a Reiki treatment over the eyes allows the practitioner to open up the client and channel the life forces through the rest of the body.
Step 4
Move your hands over other parts of the body every couple of minutes. Place hands over the various chakra points down the center of the body, such as over the chest, abdomen and hip area. Hold your hands over the sore spot if you're treating a specific illness or injury. You can lightly place your hands directly on the client's body or hold them in the air, hovering over the various body parts.
Step 5
Remain silent during the treatment that lasts anywhere from an hour to 90 minutes. Unlike massage and other alternative treatments, Reiki sessions typically are performed in silence with no meditative music or sounds to interfere with the meditative aspects of the treatment.
Step 6
End the session by fanning the client with your hands over the entire body to brush away any lingering energy surrounding the body.
Tips and Warnings
- Give your clients bottled water following a Reiki treatment and advise them to continue drinking plenty of water in the days following a session to aid in the healing process.
- While some people may expect healing to take place immediately, most Reiki practitioners find that it may take multiple sessions until the patient begins to find relief from the ailment for which they are being treated. Some clients fall asleep during a Reiki treatment, which is perfectly acceptable. Reiki is meant to induce relaxation, so you know you've achieved this if your client begins snoozing.
