St. John's Wort and Valerian

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) states that Valerian and St. John's wort can be used for depression. These herbs can be useful for mild to moderate depression, and are classified as dietary supplements. St. John's wort and Valerian interact with some medications, so to tell your health care provider if you plan to begin taking these supplements.

S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine

S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine (SAMe), pronounced "sammy," is a manufactured version of a compound the body produces naturally. The Mayo Clinic states that SAMe has been used in Europe to treat depression, and in a study conducted by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, SAMe was shown to have a positive effect in resolving depression. SAMe can be purchased at many health food stores.

Exercise

The Mayo Clinic states that exercise reduces symptoms of depression, and recommends finding enjoyable ways to engage in physical activity. Find an exercise schedule and venue that is pleasant and make it a priority to schedule it into every day. It can be helpful to exercise with a friend or group, or to take a class.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Folate

The NLM recommends ensuring an adequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids and folate to help deal with depression. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fatty fish such as tuna and salmon, and in walnuts, flax oil and flax seed. Folate is also known as vitamin B9. The NLM suggests a daily dose of 400 to 800 micrograms.

Mind and Body Remedies

The Mayo Clinic advocates supporting your mental health with practices such as meditation, acupuncture, yoga and massage therapy. The interaction between your body and your mind that these methods involve can help relieve symptoms of depression when you are guided by an experienced therapist. The NLM suggests seeking the help of counselors or clergy, and engaging in prayer.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) encourages individuals that struggle with depression to reach out for support, and to avoid isolation. Find local support groups or communities that you can identify with. Talk with your close friends and family and share your feelings with them.
