If you're looking for a natural alternative to medications for hyperactivity, there are a number of herbs to consider. In fact, in some cases you may be able to use herbs instead of medication. Not all herbs are safe to use for children, however, so before using any herbal preparations, carefully read and follow label directions and talk with your child's pediatrician or a trained naturopath.

Chamomile

Chamomile is well known for its calming ability. You can purchase chamomile preparations especially for children; chamomile is generally safe for children and is even used to calm teething infants. A cup of chamomile tea may be an especially good choice in the evenings or at bedtime.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is a calming herb that promotes relaxation, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Lemon balm is available in tinctures, capsules and can be used to prepare a calming tea. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends adjusting the dosage of lemon balm for children based on the child's weight as a percentage of the average adult weight of 150 lbs.

Rosemary and Sage

Rosemary and sage are fragrant herbs and their scents can help calm a hyperactive child. Small amounts of essential oil of rosemary and sage can be added to olive oil and applied topically; these scents can also be used in the environment. Inhaling the scents of rosemary and sage is a traditional Native American remedy for producing mental calmness.

Skullcap

Skullcap can be given in three daily doses for a period of up to three months to treat hyperactivity, according to Herbs2000. However, skullcap should not be used in children under the age of six. Skullcap has a sedative effect and is often used to treat insomnia in adults.
