If you suffer from dry skin on your feet, you may experience scaling that appears around the heels. When the scaling becomes deep, the skin can crack and bleed. This may make it difficult to stand and the cracks can make you prone to an infection. You can use several remedies to cure dry and cracked feet.

Pumice Stone

Pumice stones are naturally abrasive and can remove any rough skin that may appear on your heels. Before bathing, apply a few small drops of a mild soap to the surface of the stone. Spend several minutes working the stone over the scaled parts. Rinse away any residue by taking a shower immediately afterward.

Moisturizer

If your feet are dry and cracked, you should apply moisturizer to them twice a day. When you are selecting a moisturizer, choose an oil-based moisturizer to replenish the skin's natural protective oils. The best time to moisturize the feet is after the shower while the skin is still slightly wet. If the condition is severe, a doctor may recommend a prescription-based emollient to treat the dry skin.

Good Shoes

According to the ePodiatry website, the type of shoes you wear is an important part of relieving dry and cracked feet. You should avoid shoes with open backs or that have thin padding. Instead, choose footwear with a good shock-absorbing sole. Your shoes should fit well and not be restrictive on the feet. A heel cup can be placed inside of the shoes to prevent the heels from expanding sideways and leading to fissures.

Avoid Prolonged Standing

When you stand for long periods of time, you are put a lot of weight on the heels of your feet. This extra weight can lead to cracks and bleeding if the skin is dry. Try to sit for at least a few minutes every few hours if you are on your feet all day, advises the Mama's Health website.
