Badminton is a popular racket sport that, recent to 2010, has become an Olympic sport. Badminton uses unique equipment including a specific type of racket as well as a shuttle, a projectile used solely in badminton. The Badminton World Federation, the governing body of international badminton, creates all equipment regulations.
Feathered Shuttle
The shuttle can be made of natural or synthetic material. Shuttles can either be feathered or non-feathered. Feathered shuttles should have 16 feathers attached to the base, which are fastened firmly together. The tips of the feathers should form a circle with a diameter of between 58 and 68mm. The shuttle should weigh from 4.74 to 5.50g.
Non-Feathered Shuttles
Non-feathered shuttles should follow the same size and weight regulations as feathered shuttles. The only difference between the two is that non-feathered shuttles have a skirt or synthetic feathers to replace natural feathers. Both types of shuttles also need to have the same flight characteristics. To test a shuttle, a player should stand behind the back boundary line and hit the shuttle with a full underhand stroke towards the net. A proper shuttle will land between 530 and 990mm from the opposite boundary line.
The Racket
The racket has three parts: the handle, the shaft and the stringed area. The handle is where the player grips the racket and the stringed area is where the player hits the shuttle. The shaft connects the handle and stringed area. Rackets cannot be longer than 680mm and wider than 230mm.
The Net
The net should be made of thin cord and should be dark in color. Nets must be mesh and have an even thickness. They should be 78mm high and at least 6.1 meters wide. The net posts should be 1.55 meters high and the net should be flushed firmly with the top of the posts. The net should have white tape running along the top of it.
The Court
Competitive badminton is played indoors on a hard, flat surface. Badminton courts are rectangular in shape. The dimensions differ slightly between singles and doubles. Both have courts 13.4 meters long. However, singles' courts are 5.06 meters wide while doubles' courts are 5.9 meters wide.
