The DTaP is a vaccination used for the prevention of diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend six shots between the ages of birth and age 12, and one during adulthood. The first DTaP shot is usually given at 2 months of age. There are some side effects of the DTaP vaccine that you should be aware of.

Injection Site Complications

Your baby may experience redness, soreness and swelling at the site of the injection. This is more common after the fourth or fifth dose but may occur after any dose. If you notice these, ask the doctor whether it's OK to give your child acetaminophen or ibuprofen (for age 6 months and older) to ease discomfort, according to Baby Center. Avoid touching the affected area while holding and lifting your child. A cool compress may help alleviate swelling. Sometimes the fourth or fifth dose of DTaP vaccine is followed by swelling of the entire arm or leg in which the shot was given, lasting from one to seven days (up to about one child in 30), states the CDC.

Fever and Irritability

According to the CDC, about one in four children will experience fever after DTaP vaccination. Acetaminophen may be used to bring down fever, with your pediatrician's consent. If the fever is not relieved by medication, contact your pediatrician. Your baby may seem more irritable and sleepy than usual. This is a common side effect of the DTaP vaccine. These side effects will usually occur around one to three days after vaccination and should only last for a couple of days.

Moderate Side Effects

In rare cases seizure, nonstop crying for three hours or more, or a fever above 105 degrees Fahrenheit can occur. These side effects are uncommon. If your baby experiences any of these side effects, contact your health-care provider for emergency medical care.
