If you want to lose weight but feel like you've tried every diet in the book, don't despair--you can choose healthy ways to lose weight without dieting. By incorporating healthy lifestyle changes into your daily routine, you can slim down and tone up while reaping the lasting rewards of good health.

Exercise

Exercise is the key to losing weight, as it will help you burn more calories than you consume each day. According to Dr. John Pillinger, if you increase your daily activity level and continue to eat the same foods, you will most likely lose weight. Dr. Pillinger recommends starting a gradual fitness program, as it will give your body time to adjust to the new demands, and you'll be less likely to get injured. Choose an activity you enjoy for aerobic exercise, such as walking, swimming, running, hiking, dancing, cycling or skating, and you'll be more likely to stick with your program. Build up to exercising for 45 minutes a day at least five times a week if you are serious about wanting to lose weight. Just be sure to get your doctor's approval before you begin an exercise program.

Healthy Lifestyle Habits

Practice healthy lifestyle habits such as sleeping enough, drinking at least eight glasses of water a day (plus more for every 10 minutes of exercise), and going for regular check-ups with your physician. Sleeping at least eight hours a night will help you avoid weight gain by eliminating late-night binges and snacking, and helping your body feel rested and able to exercise. Drinking water is important for weight loss as it helps flush out toxins and fat from your body, and keeps your muscles hydrated and strong while you exercise. Scheduling regular doctor visits will help ensure you stay healthy and don't develop any conditions that could cause weight fluctuations.

Nutrition

Although you do not need to follow an official diet, it is important to eat healthy if you want to lose weight. Try simple measures such as gradually reducing your consumption of fast food or processed snacks, opting for low-fat versions of your favorite foods, and adding more fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Eating a diet that is low in saturated fats and trans fats will help you lose weight and also reduce your risk of developing health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease. Also eat lean protein, whole grains and home-cooked meals instead of restaurant meals whenever you can.
