Drugs for the Lungs

The lungs refer to a spongy paired organ that sits deep within the chest cavity. These lungs contain air sacs and blood vessels to help the body make use of the oxygen necessary to survive. In some instances, infections and diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, can affect an individual's breathing. Fortunately, drugs for the lungs exist.

Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin, commonly sold as Amoxil or Trimox, is an antibiotic medication that belongs to the group of drugs called penicillin. Specifically, it treats such lung problems as pneumonia. Drugs.com says that amoxicillin also treats ear infections, bladder infections and stomach ulcers. Its less concerning effects include a headache, vaginal itching or discharge, stomach pain, a black tongue, and white patches in the throat or mouth. Amoxillin's serious effects include a fever, chills, easy bleeding or bruising, confusion and agitation. Its other serious effects include yellowing of the skin or eyes and a blistering skin rash. Notify a physician when amoxicillin's side effects develop. Amoxicillin is a tablet or liquid taken daily or as indicated.

Moxifloxacin

Moxifloxacin, commonly sold as Avelox, is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that destroys bacterial infections. Specifically, moxifloxacin treats such lung diseases as pneumonia and bronchitis. In some instances, moxifloxacin also treats skin, stomach and sinus infections. MedlinePlus says that this medication's less serious side effects include constipation, diarrhea, a poor appetite, a dry mouth, headache, and vaginal itching or burning. Some of moxifloxacin's serious side effects include a fever, a loss of consciousness, shortness of breath, pale skin and agitation. Restlessness, depression, nightmares and a pounding, fast or irregular heartbeat are its additional side effects. Phone a doctor when moxifloxacin leads to these effects. Moxifloxacin is a tablet taken each day for 5 to 21 days.

Ipatropium

Ipatropium, commonly sold as Atrovent, is a bronchodilator medication that actually relaxes and opens the airway passages when it treats lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. MedlinePlus indicates that some of ipatropium's less serious side effects include nausea, dizziness, back pain, frequent urination and constipation. Ipatropium's serious side effects include chest pain, itching, a rash, trouble breathing or swallowing, and swelling of the tongue, face, lips, ankles, feet, lower legs and ankles. Notify a doctor when these effects develop. Ipatropium is an inhaled medication taken three to four times daily once a day for six to eight hours.
