3 Ways to Overcome Internet Addiction

1. Recognize What Role the Internet Is Playing in Your Life

The Internet fills a variety of roles for different people. For example, it can be a substitute for face-to-face socialization for people who are shy. Chatting anonymously in chat rooms or on popular social networking sites can allow a shy person to interact with others without actually having to face anyone else. The Internet can also be an outlet for people who are lonely or bored, with its vast variety of social and entertainment options providing a never-ending, 24/7 source of stimulation. For people who have sexual difficulties in their relationships, its huge supply of pornography provides instant gratification at the click of a mouse. When the Internet starts to fill a void in your life like this, you may start to spend more and more time on it, until it begins to interfere with your real relationships and responsibilities.

2. Limit the Amount of Time You Spend Online Each Day

Just because you've developed an addiction to the Internet does not mean you can never use it again. In fact, modern life is such that it is very difficult to get by without having at least some access to the Internet. This is a departure from breaking other addictions, where you are never supposed to use the addictive substance again. With Internet addiction, however, you can cope by severely limiting the amount of time you spend online.

Set a certain number of hours each day that you can use the Internet. Use a timer while you're online if you have to. If your addiction is severe, you may also need to limit the websites you can visit. Give yourself a list of acceptable URLs or types of websites, and stick to it. Involve your family and friends in your quest to break your Internet addiction by letting them know what you're doing and asking for their help in ensuring that you stick to your self-imposed limits.

3. Develop Healthy Activities Instead

If you've been using the Internet as a substitute for socializing in person, make a point to cultivate real-life relationships. Even if you're shy, you can start small by joining a volunteer organization, taking a class at an adult education center or joining a local hobby group. If you're very shy, you can seek counseling to help you overcome it. If you're using the Internet for sex, try getting counseling with your significant other to overcome your difficulties, or take measures to spice up your sex life at home. The more you can replace your Internet activities with activities in real life, the less likely you are to resume your addiction.
