Cycling shoes have cleats at the bottom that snap into the bike pedals. This creates more efficient pedaling because the foot also pulls up on the pedal, creating more power with each pedal upstroke. While it may be tricky to find the best position for the cleat on the cycling shoe, attaching the cleats only takes a few steps.

Step 1

Position the cleat against the bottom of the cycling shoe. Ideally, you should place the cleat under the ball of the foot so it will be centered over the pedal.

Step 2

Place the bolts through the openings in the cleat to attach to the shoes. Turn each bolt clockwise by hand until it feels snug. Use the Allen wrench to tighten the bolts. Do not overtighten.

Step 3

Clip into the pedals of the bike and test the position of the cleats. Check to make sure the ball of the foot is centered on the pedal, and that the foot is aligned in a comfortable position.

Step 4

Ride the bike to make sure the cleat position is correct, and you are able to disengage from the pedal easily. If necessary, adjust the cleats by loosening the bolts and sliding the cleats up or down to a better position before retightening.

Tips and Warnings

  • Once you have found the best cleat position, mark the spot on the shoes to easily replace or reposition the cleats if they become loose.
