Rosemary oil is a popular essential oil that has been used since ancient times. It is distilled from rosemary leaves, and contains more than two dozen antioxidants. Rosemary reportedly grows more in England than anywhere else in the world. More than 68 lb. of rosemary is required to make just 1 lb. of rosemary oil.

History

The use of rosemary oil is steeped in ancient history. The Romans used the rosemary plant in religious ceremonies, weddings and funerals. Egyptians used rosemary as an aromatherapy aid and created incense from its extract. The French burned rosemary in hospitals to cleanse the air and prevent infection. A physician from the 16th century by the name of Paracelsus realized the numerous benefits of rosemary early on, and wrote about its ability to strengthen the entire human body.

Benefits

Rosemary oil could potentially alleviate some health ailments. It can be used to treat respiratory issues such as allergies, a sore throat or the common cold. It can aid with bad breath issues. Rosemary oil is sometimes used as an aid in relieving aches and pains such as headaches, menstrual cramps, muscle tension and even arthritis. However, according to studies referenced by the University of Maryland Medical Center, there is no scientific evidence that it works to relieve pain. Rosemary oil can also aid with indigestion and stomach cramps, and its use in certain recipes and meats will make for easier digestion. Research is currently being conducted to discover whether or not rosemary extract prevents cancer cells from growing. Currently, no human studies have been conducted, only in vitro studies. One scientific study showed that the antioxidants in rosemary oil could prevent bad cholesterol.

Uses

Because the aroma of rosemary is so tantalizing, it is frequently used in fragrances, cosmetics and candles. When thinking of rosemary oil, aromatherapy may be the only use that comes to mind; however, rosemary has a myriad of uses. Rosemary oil can be used in a number of cooking recipes and dishes. Some studies suggest that rosemary oil can be used to boost mental activity, improve concentration and memorization, and even decrease fatigue and mild depression symptoms.

Hair Care

Rosemary oil and rosemary teas are often found in shampoos, conditioners and lotions. Rosemary stimulates hair follicles, which can promote hair growth and boost natural hair shine. Using rosemary oil on a regular basis can assist with dry scalp and eliminating dandruff. Rosemary oil could also potentially slow the graying of hair and premature hair loss. When combined with basil oil and tea tree oil, rosemary oil can be used as a scalp treatment.

Warning

Since rosemary oil is a stimulant, overuse can cause muscle spasms and vomiting. Epileptics, women who are pregnant or nursing, and those with heart conditions should avoid using rosemary oil. Individuals who develop an allergic reaction should also take precautions in using rosemary oil. A health-care professional should be contacted before use.
