Tweezing
Tweezing is one of the most inexpensive options for removing facial hair, and it's also effective. All you need is a mirror and a pair of tweezers to pluck out random hairs that crop up on the face. However, women with thicker or heavier hair growth may want to use a different form of hair removal. Tweezing is often painful and can become time-consuming when treating larger areas of the face.
Depilatories
A depilatory is another viable option for facial hair removal in women. Depilatories contain a chemical agent that dissolves the hair from the surface of the skin. But much like shaving, results only last upwards of three days, so regular use is needed to maintain the smooth appearance of the face. Depilatories can also irritate and burn the skin.
Waxing
Although waxing only provides temporary results, it's still an effective means of hair removal. Women can easily remove hair from the upper lip and chin in a matter of minutes with this method. Heated wax is applied over the unwanted hair growth and a strip of fabric is then placed atop the wax. After the wax has set, the strips are ripped from the skin, removing the hair.
Laser Treatments
Laser hair removal is a longer-lasting option for removing facial hair on women. When skin is exposed to laser light energy, the hair disintegrates and the follicle is damaged. This follicular damage retards hair growth for anywhere between 6 and 12 months, notes the Mayo Clinic. This means you can have a smooth face for an extended period of time. However, laser treatments potentially cause swelling, redness, stinging and crusting of the skin. These side effects are temporary.
Electrolysis
The American Academy of Dermatology lists electrolysis as another means of hair removal. Electrolysis provides permanent results, so this is one of your best options. A pulse of electricity is sent through a probe and into the follicle. This destroys the follicle and eliminates hair growth. Each follicle must be treated to be effective. The process can be painful, time-consuming and expensive.
