HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide) is a diuretic which is used for eliminating excess fluid from the body. HCTZ may be used for illnesses such as congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, corticosteroid and estrogen therapy, and kidney disorders, states PDR Health. It is frequently used in the treatment of high blood pressure, or hypertension. There are some side effects of HCTZ that users should be aware of.
Dizziness, Fainting, and Blurred Vision
Hydrochlorothiazide may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting; alcohol, hot weather, exercise or fever may increase these effects, reports PDR Health. You can develop blurred vision while taking HCTZ. You may want to use caution while driving or operating machinery. Dizziness and blurred vision may be worse if you take HCTZ with alcohol or certain medications. These side effects may diminish over time as your body adjusts to HCTZ. If these side effects become severe and begin to impact your daily lifestyle, contact your health care provider.
Photosensitivity
You may experience photosensitivity while taking HCTZ. You may become sunburned more easily. You should refrain from the sun, sun lamps and tanning booths until you know how this medication will affect you. Wear sun-protective clothing and sunblock while outside in the sun.
Nausea, Diarrhea and Constipation
Nausea and diarrhea may occur while taking HCTZ. Abdominal cramping and stomach irritation may also occur. This may lead to a loss of appetite and weight loss. Small dietary changes may help alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms. Eating a diet of bland foods with smaller meals more frequently spaced throughout the day may help relieve stomach upset. If you experience diarrhea that is severe, you may become dehydrated. Be sure to drink an ample amount of fluids while taking HCTZ. You may become constipated while taking HCTZ. If you experience constipation, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and high in fiber may be helpful. If dietary modification is unsuccessful an over-the-counter stool softener may help.
