Drugs Used for Cancer Patients

Cancer refers to a debilitating and potentially fatal condition in which cells grow at a really fast rate. This increase of cells can lead to tumor formation. Signs of cancer include fatigue, chills, night sweats, weight loss and a fever. Drugs for cancer patients are available to help treat the disease and manage symptoms.

Aldesleukin

Aldesleukin, commonly sold as Proleukin, is a cytokine medication that specifically treats spreading renal cell cancer. This medication helps the body defend itself against cancer. MedlinePlus, a website of the National Institutes of Health, says that aldesleukin's common side effects include a poor appetite, vomiting, nausea, dry skin, diarrhea and weakness. Weight gain, constipation, water retention and changes in the mood are aldesleukin's other side effects. Aldesleukin's serious side effects include wheezing, trouble breathing, rectal bleeding, yellowing of the skin or eyes, shaking chills and difficulty urinating. Notify a doctor if aldesleukin's effects develop. Aldesleukin is an intravenous infusion given every nine days or as prescribed.

Teniposide

Teniposide, commonly sold as Vumon, is a cancer drug that slows cancer cell growth in the body. It specifically treats acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children. Drugs.com says that teniposide's less serious side effects include hair loss, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and drowsiness. In some instances, teniposide leads to an allergic reaction, blood problems and reduced bone marrow function. Signs of an allergic reaction include closing up of the throat, trouble breathing and swelling of the tongue, face or lips. Emergency medical care is required. Tenoposide is given as an intravenous injection every week.

Cladribine

Cladribine, commonly sold as Leustatin, is a cancer drug that specifically treats hairy cell leukemia. Drugs.com says that cladribine halts the progression of cancer cells and slows its spread through the body. Its less serious effects include cough, headache, diarrhea, nausea and constipation. Sometimes pain and irritation can occur around the injection site. Cladribine's serious side effects include lower back pain, muscle weakness, yellowing of the skin, shortness of breath and fainting. In some instances, cladribine can lead to burning of the fingers or toes and easy bleeding or bruising. Notify a doctor if this drug leads to these effects. Cladribine is an intravenous injection given seven days in a row or as prescribed.
