Heartburn During Pregnancy Remedies

Pregnant women often experience heartburn, especially in the second and third trimesters when the growing uterus pushes up against the stomach. Add to that the effects of progesterone, which relaxes the digestive system and allows stomach acids to slip past the valve protecting the esophagus, and heartburn is a common result. Moms-to-be need to look for remedies that are not only effective, but also safe for an unborn baby. Fortunately, there are a variety of natural, over the counter and prescription remedies to help ease the burning sensation that characterizes heartburn during pregnancy.

Antacids

Antacids are available over the counter and contain substances that neutralize the stomach acid, such as calcium or magnesium. Beware of brands that contain aluminum or aspirin, since these ingredients should not be consumed by pregnant women. Some antacids are also high in sodium, which can be another concern. Too much sodium in a pregnant woman's diet can lead to excessive swelling. Chewable antacids made from calcium carbonate are a safe option, according to Baby Center expert and pharmacist Gerald Briggs. Magnesium based products may provide longer-lasting relief, however. Liquid antacids or chewable tablets are better options than a pill that needs to dissolve in the digestive tract.

Acid Reducers

Unless they also contain antacids, acid reducers won't provide immediate relief. However, they are considered safe and effective at preventing acid reflux for up to 12 hours. Some acid reducers are available over the counter, while others require a prescription. Combination products with an acid reducer and antacid are available to provide both long-term and immediate relief from heartburn.

Dairy

Some dairy products may ease heartburn naturally. Eating yogurt is one natural method for easing heartburn suggested by the American Pregnancy Association. The probiotic cultures in yogurt may also help prevent further incidents of heartburn, since they help keep the digestive tract healthy. A glass of milk with a tablespoon of honey is another option.
