Proactiv is an acne treatment and prevention system, primarily designed for treating mild acne. Two dermatologists developed Proactiv, according to its official website, in order to combine an effective topical acne medication with soothing botanical agents. You must follow the steps as directed and use the products daily to be sure Proactiv will work properly.
Renew
Step one of the Proactiv system is Renew, a cleanser containing benzoyl peroxide in exfoliating micro-crystals. Benzoyl peroxide penetrates into clogged pores where anaerobic bacteria that cause acne thrive. It provides oxygen that eliminates this bacteria, reduces inflammation and clears pores of dead skin cells. The exfoliating beads help slough away these dead cells, as well as remove dirt and excess oil. You should apply Renew to your entire face twice daily, in the morning and before bedtime. First dampen your skin, then apply a dime-sized amount of Renew and massage gently for a minute or two. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
Revitalize
The second step is called Revitalize. This product is an alcohol-free toner containing glycolic acid, a substance which removes dead skin cells, impurities and excess oil. Revitalize also contains botanical substances to help soothe skin, including aloe and fruit and flower extracts. It also contains the astringent witch hazel to tighten pores. Apply a dime-sized amount of Revitalize in the morning and again before bedtime, allow it to dry, and don't rinse it off.
Repair
The oil-free lotion, called Repair, is the third step of the Proactiv system. Repair also contains benzoyl peroxide, but the lotion is gentler on the skin than the cleanser. Like the other products, you should apply it in the morning and again at night to affected areas. Use only a pea-sized amount, allow it to dry, and don't rinse.
