Sinus infections can affect every area of your life. They can make you feel drowsy, lethargic and uncomfortable. While one of the most common ways to treat a sinus infection is with over-the-counter and prescription drugs, many people prefer using holistic remedies to treat sinus infections that are safe and effective. Holistic medicine incorporates a more natural approach, providing relief without the harsh side effects of many drugs.
Neti Pot
A neti pot is a small container designed to irrigate the nasal cavity. Using a saline solution and warm water, you place the neti pot up to one nostril and pour the solution through the sinuses. The sinus rinse cleanses the cavity of impurities, provides moisture and soothes the inflamed and irritated sinuses. Dr. James T. Li of the Mayo Clinic states that with regular use, a neti pot can be more effective at treating sinus issues than traditional medicine.
Humidity
Use a humidifier in your home. Maintaining proper humidity can soothe the sinuses and reduce swelling, assisting your body in healing itself. Place a cool mist humidifier in your room at night while you sleep with a few drops of eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptus oil will help open the sinus cavity.
Tea Tree Oil
According to Treehugger.com, tea tree oil has both antifungal and antibiotic properties that can aid in killing any infection in the sinuses. Tea tree oil may be used in several ways to treat a sinus infection. Place a small pot of water on the stove and bring it to a boil. Place four drops of tea tree oil in the pot and place your head over the boiling water. Cover your head with a towel to trap the steam. Keep your head over the steam for 20 minutes, once in the morning and once in the evening. You can also place a drop or two under your nostrils throughout the day. Tea tree oil can also be added to a neti pot rinse or to a saline nasal spray.
Warm Compress
Use a warm, moist compress to soothe and restore moisture to your sinuses. Take a wash cloth and run it under hot water until it is saturated. Ring it out, leaving it damp but not dripping. Lie on your back and place the hot wash cloth directly over your eyes. Reheat the cloth as it loses its warmth. Do this for 20 minutes and repeat as often as needed.
