If your hair looks limp, dull and lifeless, it could be the way you are styling it. If you use a blow-dryer, straightener or lots of hairspray to style your hair every morning, you are causing more damage than good. Hair that has been over-styled, permed or colored frequently can become damaged. It may look like straw, feel dry and get tangled more easily. To bring the luster back into your hair, use a home remedy to add moisture.

Step 1

Stop over-shampooing. Wash your hair as little as possible. Although you may feel the urge to wash your hair every day, doing so will strip your hair of its natural oils. Wash your hair every other day at the most for shiny, beautiful hair.

Step 2

Make a homemade hair mask. Mash up one avocado, 2 tbsp. olive oil, a banana and an egg, recommends Helen Ambrosen, product creator at Lush cosmetics, on Cosmopolitan.com. Apply the mixture to your hair for 10 minutes, then rinse your hair in the shower. Apply this mask to your hair once a week.

Step 3

Place store-bought mayonnaise directly on your hair. Let it sit for up to an hour before rinsing it out. Apply mayonnaise on your hair once a week to moisturize it, recommends Steven Docherty, senior art director at New York City's Vidal Sassoon Salon.

Step 4

Spritz beer on your hair instead of hairspray. Hairspray can be harsh and drying to your hair. Instead, fill a spray bottle with beer, then spritz and scrunch your hair to your heart's content.

Step 5

Protect your hair from the elements. If you are going outside on a windy day, wear a hat or scarf on your head. If you are about to swim in chlorinated water, don a bathing cap. If you are getting ready for a day at the beach, wear a hat or smooth some sunscreen over your hair before sitting in the sun.

Tips and Warnings

  • Hair color that contains ammonia or peroxide is very damaging to hair.
  • Consult a doctor if your hair is so damaged that it is falling out.
