1. Choose Your Colon Cleansing Method
Choose the type of 10-day colon cleansing you'd like to try and discuss it with your doctor. There are "fasting" cleanses that only let you drink liquids, Hawaiian colon cleanses that are based on drinking saltwater to stimulate bowel production and cleansing regimens that allow you to eat fresh fruit and vegetables throughout. Your doctor will evaluate whether your health is strong enough to withstand a rigorous elimination diet. He will also tell you about warning signs you should watch for while you are undergoing the cleanse, such as dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, weakness and cramping.
Discuss whether you should take vitamins to make sure you are getting the nutrition you need during this time. Most commercial multi-day colon cleanse kits include herbal supplements that help flush toxins from your body and give you energy. Have your doctor check them out to determine whether they are safe for you to use.
2. Cut Back on Processed and Fatty Foods
In the few weeks leading up to your 10-day colon cleanse, gradually cut back on red meats and highly processed foods. Start eating more fresh fruits and vegetables to prepare your body for what is to come. Fresh produce that is high in fiber and contains a lot of water will help your digestive system move smoothly. It will kick-start your colon into emptying easily on its own before you begin the strict detox diet. Stock up on foods with natural cleansing agents like garlic, onions, lemon juice and apple juice. Buy some herbs to brew into tea such as red raspberry leaf, ginger root and peppermint, or buy ready-made teas of this kind at your supermarket or health food store.
3. Clear Your Schedule
Clear your schedule of all obligations for the next 10 days, as you will be preparing and drinking cleansing teas and other detoxifying drinks every couple of hours all day long. You will also need easy access to a bathroom at all times for the next week and a half, especially if the cleansing schedule you have chosen includes enemas. Each individual packaged colon cleansing kit will have specific instructions as to when you should take the next dose of herbs, tea or fruit-filled meal.
4. Head to a Medical Spa
You may decide you are not comfortable dealing with such a long cleansing process on your own at home. A medical spa or colonic hydrotherapy center is a good option if you want to detox in a controlled environment with certified medical professionals who can monitor your progress. Your doctor or local hospital can recommend a center that is appropriate for your purposes.
