The natural process of aging causes wrinkles to form in your skin. This happens because your skin becomes drier, thinner and less elastic as you get older. Other causes of wrinkles are the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun and smoking. You can get rid of wrinkles by undergoing procedures such as chemical peels, laser resurfacing and Botox injections. Consult your dermatologist to know which one is right for you.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are capable of reducing or getting rid of fine to severe wrinkles. They are done by applying chemicals such as alphahydroxy acids, trichloroacetic acid or phenol to your skin and then taking them off after while. Chemical peels can be superficial or deep based on the concentration or strength of the chemical solution used. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery explains that superficial peels treat fine wrinkles while deeper chemical peels treat deeper, more coarse wrinkles.
Soft-Tissue Fillers
Fat, collagen and hyaluronic acid are a group of injectable fillers that are called soft-tissue fillers. Wrinkles are smoothed and plumped out when these soft tissue fillers are injected into them, according to the Mayo Clinic. Some soft-tissue fillers are Artefill, Radiesse, Restylane and Juvederm. Temporary side effects of these fillers are redness, swelling and bruising at the treated sites.
Ablative Laser Resurfacing
Ablative laser resurfacing is also referred to as wounding laser resurfacing. During this procedure, a laser beam is targeted on your skin. The beam destroys the top layer of your skin, or your epidermis, and heats up the bottom layer of your skin, also known as the dermis. Destruction of your epidermis leads to the development of new skin, while heating of your dermis stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that keeps your skin wrinkle-free. This procedure smooths out wrinkles, but it needs to be repeated at intervals to prevent the wrinkles from reoccurring.
Botox Injections
Botox, also known as botulinum toxin type A, smooths out wrinkles. When your dermatologist injects Botox into your face, it blocks nerves that cause wrinkles such as frown lines. This temporarily paralyzes the muscle and gives your skin a smoother, more refreshed look. The effect of Botox lasts for about three to four months. Risks associated with Botox injection are infection, bruising at the treatment site and the chance that the injection may affect other muscle groups, leading to effects like drooping of an eyelid. Botox temporarily eliminates or reduces wrinkles such as forehead creases, crows feet and frown lines.
