1. Moisturize Regularly
The itching, scaly skin of eczema is caused in part because the skin is dried out. You can use a moisturizer to help fight that aspect of the problem. Stick to moisturizers without perfumes or dyes, since they can make the condition worse. Petroleum jelly, vitamin E oil, moisturizing bath bars, myrrh, kelp, aloe vera, flaxseed oil and primrose oil can all work to soothe your skin and control the eczema symptoms. A dermatologist may be able to recommend prescription medication or steroid injections to help in severe cases.
2. Take a Colloidal Oatmeal Bath
Colloidal oatmeal, which isn't the same as breakfast oatmeal, can be poured into a bath and makes a great way to soothe your skin. Pour 2 to 3 cups under the tap while it's running so that it can spread through the water more completely. Try to keep the water lukewarm rather than hot. Hot water dries out your skin, which is bad for eczema. Soak in the colloidal oatmeal bath for at least 15 minutes, and then blot yourself dry rather than rubbing. The colloidal oatmeal will make the water slippery, so take care when you step out of the tub.
3. Wear Soft Clothing Fabrics
Eczema makes the skin extremely sensitive, and itchy fabrics, such as wool, can make the condition worse. Try to wear light clothes made of natural fibers such as cotton and silk. Stick to loose outfits that let your skin breathe.
4. Use a Humidifier on Dry Days
The weather can have a huge effect on eczema, particularly on dry days when there's very little moisture in the air. Use a humidifier in your house when the air is dry and don't spend an excessive amount of time outdoors. The same holds true for hot days with a lot of sun. Not only will a sunburn make eczema worse, but the sun's rays can dry out your skin very quickly.
5. Expect the Symptoms to Come and Go
Eczema is a little like acne in that it can flare up and fade away over and over again. The symptoms may return after you've treated them. Stress and other factors may cause another outbreak in the future. If a particular moisturizer or specific medication works well for you, keep supplies handy in your medicine cabinet.
