Amlodipine besylate, or Norvasc, is a prescription drug used in the treatment of high blood pressure and chronic stable angina (chest pain). It belongs to a class of medications called calcium channel blockers (CCBs). Calcium channel blockers prevent calcium from being absorbed into the body and producing its effects. This leads to relaxation and expansion of the blood vessels. The heart will not need to work as hard and blood pressure will decrease. Amlodipine may cause many common side effects; discuss any concerns with a health care provider before initiating drug therapy.

Pulmonary Edema

Pulmonary edema, which is the accumulation of fluid in the lungs, may occur with the use of amlodipine. It may occur in about 27 percent of individuals who have heart failure. Signs and symptoms include difficulty breathing, cough, wheezing and chest pain. Seek medical attention right away if you experience any of these symptoms. Pulmonary edema is a serious reaction and requires medical intervention. If left untreated, pulmonary edema can cause coma and death.

Peripheral Edema

Amlodipine may cause a condition called peripheral edema, which is the accumulation of fluid in the lower extremities. This causes swelling in the lower legs and feet. About 2 to 15 percent of people experience peripheral edema, states the "Drug Information Handbook." The occurrence of peripheral edema is related to the dose; the higher the dose, the higher the risk of developing peripheral edema. Seek immediate medical help if you experience swelling.

Flushing

Flushing is a common side effect of amlodipine. Flushing is blood rushing into the face and hands that causes redness; you may also feel that your face is hot. About 5 percent of people may experience this side effect. It is not a cause for concern, but if it is accompanied by itchiness, swelling, or shortness of breath, seek medical attention immediately. It may indicate something serious, such as an allergic reaction.

Headache

Amlodipine may cause headache in up to 7 percent of individuals, reports the "Drug Information Handbook." A pain reliever may help alleviate this bothersome side effect. Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil (ibuprofen) are two common pain relievers used, but discuss your options with your physician or pharmacist to make sure you get the best one for you. This side effect will begin to decrease as your body gets accustomed to the drug.

Dizziness

Dizziness is another common side effect produced by amlodipine. The medication will cause the blood vessels to expand; dizziness is a direct effect of this action, explains "Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach." Up to 4 percent of individuals may experience this side effect. Be careful when driving or operating heavy machinery until you know the effect of the medication on your ability to function. If the dizziness becomes worse or you feel faint, call your physician right away.
