Soccer is the most popular team sport in the world and is a sport that children often take to quickly. While baseball requires significant hand-eye coordination and other fine motor skills, soccer is about running and kicking a larger ball, skills that are easier to master for young children. Once youngsters get used to being on the soccer field, they have to learn the basic skills of the game. One of the most important skills is passing.
Dribble and Pass
It's always important for players to learn dribbling skills. A player who can combine dribbling with a solid pass will be ahead of the game. Set up three cones starting at about 15 yards past midfield. The player should start at the midfield line and dribble to the right of the first cone, the left of the second and the right of the third. As soon as he gets past the third cone, he needs to find his open teammate standing 15 yards to his left and pass to him accurately. The key is to pass the ball quickly after dribbling past the last cone and not hold onto the ball so the defenders can't get too close to him.
Four Corners
Set up an area on the practice field about 8 yards square. Put a player on three of the four corners of the square and a cone on the fourth corner. One player goes in the middle. The idea is for the players on the outside to pass the ball to each other without the player in the middle stealing the ball. This needs to be done with crisp and accurate passes. Continue on in this manner until the player in the middle is able to steal the ball or disrupt the passing. The player who made the poor pass or mishandled a pass takes his spot in the middle.
Clear the Decks
Divide your soccer team so that half the players are on one side of the field and the other half is on the other side of the balls. Each side should have eight soccer balls on its side of the field. On the coach's whistle, players will try to pass the ball from their side of the field to their opponent's side. When an opponent's ball shows up on your half of the field, you need to kick it back onto the other side of the field. The coach will blow his whistle after two minutes. The side with the fewest soccer balls on its side of the field wins this passing game.
