How to Stop Coughing With Acupressure

On January 17, 2008 the FDA issued an official public health advisory recommending that over-the-counter cough and cold medications not be used in children under age 2. Such medications have not been proven safe or effective in children of this age group. Side effects from cough medication can occur in people of any age. One way to avoid these dangers is through alternative health therapies such as acupressure. Acupressure can be used to stop coughing at any time and place.

Step 1

Press the center of your chest on the breast bone using your finger or thumb. Use small, circular motions to massage the area for between 30 seconds and 2 minutes.

Step 2

Using the same motion massaging motion, press your chest in the soft, fleshy area next to your shoulder and below your collar bone. Massage this area for 30 to 120 seconds.

Step 3

Press the palm of your hand between your first and second fingers, just below where they split. Massage this area for up to two minutes.

Step 4

Massage the area on the thumb side of your wrist, two finger spaces above the wrist crease. Continue massaging for up to two minutes.

Step 5

Repeat all of the acupressure points as necessary to stop the cough. Points can be massaged as frequently as you can tolerate.

Step 6

Seek care from a qualified health care professional if the symptoms worsen or do not stop in 7 to 10 days.
