Tegretol (carbamazepine) is an anti-convulsant drug. It's main purpose is to block nerve impulses that cause pain and seizures. It is used in the treatment of epilepsy to stop certain types of seizures. Tegretol treats nerve pain associated with trigeminal neurolgia, diabetic neruropathy and other nerve disorders. It is also prescribed as a time-release capsule for the treatment of many behavioral disorders such as bi-polar disorder and other mental health issues.
Behavioral Effects
People who take Tegretol may experience thoughts of suicide. It can also cause confusion and disorientation. If you experience any of these symptoms or a decrease in alertness, notify your physician immediately. Do not stop taking Tegretol. Contact your physician to find the best way to discontinue its use. Moderate to severe reactions may occur if you stop taking it abruptly. Drugs.com suggests contacting your physician if you experience mood swings or other abnormal behaviors.
Severe Side Effects
Tegretol may cause wheezing, shortness of breath, swollen or painful glands and severe joint or bone pain. Swelling in the hands and feet is also possible. Tegretol may also cause your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight and UV rays. Wear sunscreen and appropriate clothing to limit your exposure. Avoid using tanning beds.
Moderate Side Effects
Headache, blurred vision, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain are possible side effects. Muscle cramps in the legs, drowsiness or feelings of unsteadiness may also occur. Skin rashes, hives and white patchy areas on the skin should be reported to your physician if they become severe.
