Ativan (lorazepam) belongs to a group of drugs called benzodiazepines and is commonly used to treat anxiety. Ativan works by altering chemicals in the brain in order to slow down the central nervous system, according to the Mayo Clinic. Ativan is also commonly given before surgical procedures in order to ease anxiety. As with all medications, you should be aware of the possible side effects and what to do if you experience them.

Nervous System Side Effects

The most common side effects of using Ativan affect your nervous system, states the Mayo Clinic. Although Ativan can reduce anxiety, it can also cause drowsiness, and sleepiness. This occurs because Ativan depresses, or slows down, your central nervous system, which can result in these effects. These side effects are less serious; however, you should refrain from driving or operating heavy machinery while taking Ativan. More serious nervous system side effects include angriness, agitation, altering consciousness, blurry vision, confusion, convulsions, feelings of sadness, memory loss, headache and trouble sleeping. These side effects may be a sign of increased sensitivity to Ativan or signs of an overdose. Stop taking Ativan and immediately call your doctor if you are experiencing these effects.

Gastrointestinal System Side Effects

Ativan may cause unwanted side effects to your gastrointestinal tract, states Drugs.com. These side effects are less serious and include appetite changes, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Your body will likely adjust to Ativan and these side effects should improve. Avoid taking over-the-counter stomach medication without first consulting your doctor. If your side effects do not improve, call your doctor and he may reduce your dosage or prescribe a different medication.

Skin Side Effects

According to the Mayo Clinic, Ativan may cause unwanted effects to your skin. Less serious side effects include skin rash, sores on the lips or in the mouth, reddening of the skin or itching. Do not put any skin creams on these rashes; instead, tell your doctor of these skin side effects that you are experiencing. Serious side effects include yellowing of the skin, bluish lips or skin or bleeding gums. In these cases, you should immediately stop taking Ativan and seek prompt medical treatment.
