There are many ways to quit smoking. It does not usually involve just one approach but uses several methods to help you along to becoming smoke-free. Think of your better health, the money you will save and sparing your loved ones from smoke as you try some of these ways to quit smoking.

Nicotine Replacement

Nicotine replacement therapy provides you with nicotine in the form of gums, patches, sprays, inhalers or lozenges, the American Cancer Society notes. These methods do not have the other harmful chemicals found in tobacco. This type of therapy will help relieve your withdrawal symptoms, while you can focus on the emotional part of quitting.

Support Network

Tell your friends, co-workers and family you are quitting, so you can rely on their support. It will provide you with incentive to reach your goal of staying off tobacco. Some people you know might be ex-smokers and can give you tips or help get you through the difficult spots of quitting. Use support programs online or over the telephone, advises Smokefree.gov, a National Cancer Institute website. Your support network can also help you if you ever have cravings for a cigarette. Get on the phone, and call a friend or counselor. Spend time with nonsmoking people as often as possible.

Stay Busy

Go to the theater, your favorite restaurant or other places where smoking is not allowed. Smokefree.gov recommends drinking lots of water and fruit juice. Avoid alcoholic beverages, which may trigger a desire to smoke. Keep your mouth busy by replacing that cigarette with toothpicks, carrot sticks, cinnamon sticks, hard candy or sugarless gum.

Physical Activity

Quitting smoking is a good time to start a new exercise plan. You only need 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day, most days of the week, to keep any cravings away, the Mayo Clinic says. Your activity can be as simple as walking, jogging or bike riding. Do physical chores around the house or in the yard to feel healthy and smoke-free.

Avoid Temptations

Stay away from places or situations where you once smoked. If you used to smoke following a meal, take a walk or read something instead. If you smoked while talking on the telephone, keep a pen and paper handy to do some doodling. Avoid establishments where you once smoked.

Relaxation Techniques

Some people start to get stressed out when they quit smoking. You can learn new ways of dealing with stress with relaxation techniques, the Mayo Clinic says. Deep breathing exercises and yoga are good ways to clear your mind and make your body feel good. Try visualization, such as closing your eyes and picturing yourself in a calm, pleasant location. Hypnosis and massage have also been successful in helping people relax to quit smoking.
