Cataracts are small collections of protein that accumulate on the eye lens causing it to be cloudy and making it difficult to see. This difficulty affects distance vision and causes problems with glare. Cataracts develop slowly but as they progressively worsen, visual impairment and other problems occur.
Problems Viewing Lights
Cataracts cause a number of symptoms which differ in how they affect your vision. Some patients experience a sensitivity to light and glare and require sunglasses or protective eye wear when outside and while driving. You may see halos around lights especially when looking at the sun or round light sources. Over time, you may require additional light when reading or working, or have increased difficulty seeing at night.
Changes in Vision
As cataracts worsen, your vision may become clouded, blurred or dimmed. Colors may appear faded or a yellow shade. Some patients report developing double vision in a single eye, making it difficult to focus.
Physical Symptoms
The clouding of the lens and changes in vision may cause you to strain your eyes to try and see better. Some patients have an increase in blinking to try and focus or clear their vision. If untreated or undetected, you may notice that you frequently need to change your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses as a result of the decline in your vision.
