1. Rule Out Infection
Make an appointment with your doctor to run tests if you are experiencing constant diarrhea. Diarrhea can be viral in nature, but it can also be caused by bacteria and parasites. If your diarrhea is caused by an infection, your doctor can prescribe potent antibiotics to clear it up. He may also treat you with anti-inflammatory medications to allow your digestive tract to rest after all the turmoil it's gone through. At the same time, you may ask to be tested for Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel disorder. A primary symptom of Crohn's disease is severe, frequent bouts of diarrhea.
2. Stay Hydrated
When you have constant diarrhea, you run the risk of becoming dehydrated because everything you eat and drink is eliminated before your body can absorb enough water and nutrients. Drink plenty of water and clear liquids during the course of your illness, even if you are taking medications to treat a bacterial infection or parasites. Try to drink at least 64 oz. of water throughout the course of each day.
3. Eat Lightly
The last thing you may feel like doing is eating when you have constant diarrhea, but it is vital to keep up your strength with food. Adjust your diet accordingly and eat light, bland foods like toast, crackers, plain pasta without sauce or rice. Bananas are a good remedy for diarrhea. Avoid heavy, greasy and fatty foods, as they can upset your stomach even more. Limit the amount of dairy products you eat, as well as citrus- and tomato-based foods that can irritate your stomach's lining.
4. Reduce Stress
Reducing the stress in your life may help control your constant battle with diarrhea. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and Crohn's disease are two conditions that can be made worse by negative emotions such as stress, anger and worry. Try to keep your emotions on an even keel to prevent acute attacks of diarrhea. Take some time out from your busy day-to-day schedule and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet. Go have a massage, listen to some music or take a long, warm shower. Together with medication and altering your diet, you may find that your constant diarrhea eases up when you are more relaxed.
