Treatment for anxiety symptoms or disorders depends on the severity of the problem. Some people can prevent or reduce anxiety through simple lifestyle changes. Other people, who suffer from generalized anxiety disorders or phobias, benefit from professional help. The methods usually prove effective in relieving anxiety and returning people to normal lives by overcoming their fears.

Psychotherapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps patients with anxiety problems understand the reason for their concerns, change their way of thinking and readjust their behavior patterns, according to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America. They learn skills and practice them for improvement during and in between sessions. Exposure therapy exposes the person to fears that cause the anxiety. It helps to desensitize the fears so the person realizes the outcome is not so serious. People with obsessive-compulsive disorders and phobias often benefit from exposure therapy. These therapeutic methods help people cope with unwanted thoughts or feelings by tolerating them and seeing them in less disturbing ways to help change their behavior.

Medication

Sometimes medication may prove necessary in order to use other techniques more effectively later on, Psych Central explains. A person suffering from severe anxiety symptoms may not be able to concentrate on anxiety therapy in the early stages. The anxiety attacks may be so overwhelming they interfere with the person's daily activities. The medication is tapered off as the patient becomes ready to use self-help or counseling methods. Anti-anxiety drugs, such as benzodiazepines, produce sedative effects. They can have side effects, such as performance impairment. Antidepressants are often used as an alternative to anti-anxiety medication for treatment over longer periods.

Healthy Lifestyle

Stress, a major cause of anxiety, can decrease because of health improvement methods. Daily exercise improves the mood and relieves stress while keeping a person healthy, the Mayo Clinic points out. It recommends developing a regular exercise routine and building up gradually so the person receives exercise most days of the week. A healthy diet that avoids processed foods, fat and sugar also provides a healthy body to help reduce stress. Relaxation techniques help ease anxiety, the Mayo Clinic says. Yoga and meditation prove good ways to relax and prevent stressful thoughts. Visualization techniques help a person imagine being surrounded by calming effects that soothe anxious feelings. People with anxiety problems should avoid alcohol and sedatives that can increase anxiety symptoms, as long as medication is not needed. Getting enough quality sleep also reduces anxiety symptoms.
