4 Ways to Stay Active After Retirement

1. Join a Senior Fitness Class

Many community health centers offer fitness classes geared especially toward seniors. Yoga, Tai Chi and water aerobics are especially popular, but you may be able to find other options, depending on where you live. Libraries are also known for hosting fitness activities, although many do so as one-time events rather than ongoing classes. You might also join a walking or hiking club.

2. Try a New Hobby

If you always wanted to take up pottery or learn a new language, now is the time to do it. Many places offer discounted or free classes for seniors, or you may be able to join a class at a local library or community college. Even if your chosen hobby is sedentary, getting to and from the classes will keep you moving and help you socialize.

3. Don't Think It's All or Nothing

Just because you're not able to run a marathon doesn't mean you should stop trying. Can't run at all? Jog, walk or hike. Ride a bike for a great lower-body workout with very little impact. Remember that you're not out there trying to compete with younger people. The key is to do as much as you can, as frequently as possible, and have fun in the process.

4. Take Day Trips

Several organizations, such as The Sierra Club, offer guided outdoor trips for seniors. Most of these trips are short (just a few hours) and involve spending time outdoors, engaged in activities as varied as hiking in a forest and canoeing down the river. Other non-profit organizations take volunteers for days out cleaning the beach or helping wildlife. These are very active pursuits.
