3 Ways to Treat Flat Warts

1. Zap Flat Warts with Over-the-Counter Salicylic Acid Remedies

Flat warts tend to appear in clusters and spread quickly, so treat them early. Over-the-counter remedies that contain salicylic acid can treat the occurence of these warts. Just watch for unwanted side effects, such as dry skin or a sensitive skin reaction to the acid. If the skin surrounding the wart does get dry or irritated, don't scratch it, since that will spread the virus.

2. Use Retinoids or Topical Immune Modulators to Banish Flat Warts

To effectively treat flat warts, you can use drugs containing retinoids, such as tretinoin (brand name creams include Avita, Renova and Retin-A). Additionally, topical agents containing benzoyl peroxide or 5-fluoracil have proven effective, as have immune modulators such as imiquimod (also known as Aldara). A dermatologist will discuss these options with you to determine the most effective approach to treat your condition. However, flat warts typically do not respond well to treatment and you may have to try a few different options before finding an effective approach. Other options include glycolic acids or other surface peeling preparations.

3. Ask About Cryotherapy, Laser Treatment or Minor Surgery

Cryotherapy, laser treatment or minor surgery may also be used to eliminate flat warts. Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze off the wart. This approach is often effective, but may require more than one treatment. Laser treatments or minor surgery will completely remove the wart and surrounding tissue to prevent recurrence. However, these approaches can result in minor scarring. A dermatologist will discuss these options with you to determine whether these approaches would be effective. However, since flat warts occur in clusters, topical treatment with retinoids or immune modulators will probably be your dermatologist's first suggestion.
