Exfoliating your feet is just one part of a full foot treatment known as a "foot facial"--a spa treatment designed to improve the health of your feet and skin. This luxurious treatment can be expensive when received from a spa or beauty salon, but it can also be done at home at a much lower cost. Pumice stones are scrubbing stones made from volcanic rock. They are used to wear away dead skin and calluses that develop on your feet. You can exfoliate your feet with just a few items in half an hour or less.
Step 1
Combine the sea salt, vegetable oil and essential oil to create a salt scrub.
Step 2
Wash your feet with soap and warm water, then let your feet soak in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes.
Step 3
Apply the salt scrub to your feet, which will help exfoliate your skin when the pumice stone runs over it on your foot.
Step 4
Rub the pumice stone gently along the bottom of your foot to scrape away dead skin cells. Place the pumice stone at the end of your toes, then pull it along the length of your foot. Use short strokes of about 2 inches, scraping the foot evenly. Work your way down to the heel.
Step 5
Run the pumice stone repeatedly over calluses that have developed on your feet. Continue rubbing away skin until only a thin layer remains.
Step 6
Cover your foot in a foot cream featuring soothing ingredients such as mint or aloe.
Tips and Warnings
- If you decide to get rid of calluses with a pumice stone, you should also eliminate the agitant that caused the callus to develop in the first place. This could mean getting a sole implant for your shoe, wearing different socks or getting a new shoe altogether. Make sure your shoes fit properly to avoid developing calluses on your feet.
- Calluses usually develop when your skin decides it needs to protect itself from damage, such as wear from a particular spot on your shoes. Do not wear the skin in these spots away entirely--this opens your skin up to infection and potential blistering.
