Hair loss can occur in both men and women. Hair thinning and hair loss can result due to male pattern baldness, genetics, hormonal imbalances, deficiencies in nutrition, stress and age. Herbs that stimulate the scalp and hair roots can promote hair growth and stronger, healthier hair. These can be used by individuals with hair loss problems or to improve hair health.
Rosemary
Rosemary is a common kitchen herbal plant that has needle like leaves. The leaves contain a potent oil that is high in antioxidants, cleanses the scalp and increases blood circulation in the body. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology recommends rosemary to promote new hair growth in the scalp by limiting the buildup of scalp sebum (oil) that can cause blockages in hair follicles. Rosemary leaves can be added to other hair oils, or rosemary essential oil can be used topically by massaging onto the scalp. This stimulates circulation to the hair roots to prevent or reduce hair loss and keep hair healthy.
Ginkgo
Ginkgo or ginkgo biloba is a common herbal remedy used to strengthen memory and concentration in elderly adults and improve blood circulation when it is taken internally in capsule form. It also helps to promote hair growth because it stimulates blood and nutrients to the scalp and throughout the body.
Horsetail
The herb horsetail contains the nutrient mineral silica which improves nail and hair growth. Silica or silica acid helps to maintain blood cell walls; this improves circulation of oxygen and nutrients to the scalp and throughout the body, and the removal of waste products and toxins for better, faster growth of hair. This herbal remedy can be taken internally as a tea, or in capsule form, or mixed with shampoo and applied directly to the hair and scalp.
Lavender
Lavender is a traditional flowering plant that is used in shampoos, conditioners and hair oils to help balance the scalp. It contains antiseptic cleansing properties to remove dead skin cell and oil buildup on the scalp to stimulate hair growth. Lavender also contains antioxidants that fight free radicals that can cause damaging inflammation to hair roots and other cells in the body. Lavender oil is often combined with rosemary, thyme, cedarwood and jojoba oils to make hair growth massage oils.
Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto is a traditional treatment for prostate problems in men. According research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, this herb may also decrease hair loss because it contains compounds that prevent the formation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from the hormone testosterone. DHT may be a contributor to male pattern baldness as well as prostate enlargement in men. The berries are the parts of the saw palmetto herb used, and also have antioxidant properties. Saw palmetto is taken internally as capsules, tablets or in dried form as teas.
