Bladder infection occurs when microbes such as E. coli bacteria enter the urethra, travel to the bladder and multiply. While harmless in itself, a bladder infection may lead to a kidney infection, which can be fatal if not treated properly. To date, antibiotic medications are the only proven cure for bladder infections, though home remedies may help prevent them from spreading until a doctor can be seen. When caught in its earliest stages, a bladder infection may be effectively eliminated by home remedies.
Uva Ursi
Uva Ursi (Arctostaphylos uva ursi), also known as bearberry, is a helpful herb for treating bladder infections. It contains a substance known as arbutin, which has potent antiseptic properties. Uva ursi is also high in tannins that help tighten mucus membranes and promote healing. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, uva ursi is an effective remedy for urinary tract infections that was used before the advent of antibiotic medications.
Because it contains hydroquinone---a potent liver toxin---uva ursi should not be used for longer than five days in a row, five times per year. It should be avoided altogether by people with pre-existing liver disease.
Cranberry
Cranberry is a well-known remedy for bladder infection. It contains many healthy compounds, such as vitamin C and other antioxidants that may help strengthen the immune system to fight infection. According to the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, cranberry acidifies the urine and helps prevent bacteria from adhering to bladder walls, making it an effective preventive therapy for urinary tract infection.
Despite its effectiveness for preventive uses, cranberry has not been proven effective for treating existing bladder infections. It can be taken in supplement form in doses of 300 to 400 mg. twice daily, or 8 oz of juice up to three times daily. When buying cranberry juice, choose brands that contain 100 percent cranberry juice with no sugar added.
Dandelion Leaf
A common nuisance in gardens and yards, dandelion can be a useful treatment for bladder infections. Its leaves have diuretic properties that help stimulate the production of urine, thereby helping to flush the bladder of infection. It is also high in nutrients such as B-vitamins, iron, zinc and potassium, which may help support healthy immune function.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the average dose of dandelion for treating bladder infection is 1 to 2 tsp. dried leaf material up to 3 times per day. Dandelion can be brewed into a tea, taken in supplement form or added to salads and other dishes for its diuretic effects.
Preventive Measures
While home remedies may be helpful for treating a bladder infection, prevention is the best form of treatment. Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day and avoid holding your urine, as this allows bacteria to multiply in the bladder. Women should remember to wipe from front to back and wash thoroughly after sex to avoid introducing bacteria into the urethra.
