Hitting the ball hard in competitive softball can be quite difficult. Pitchers can throw the ball at speeds up to 70 miles per hour. They can also throw risers, drops, curves and change-ups. But hitters who come to the plate with a great mental approach and excellent technique have a chance to hit the ball hard.
Comfortable Stance
In order to have a chance to become a good hitter, you have to take a comfortable stance. Your feet should be about shoulder-width apart, and your head should be still in order to have a clear view of the pitch as it comes in. Lean towards the back of the batter's box and put your weight on you back leg. This puts you in a perfect position to bring your momentum forward as the pitch is being delivered towards home plate.
Small Step
In fast-pitch softball, you don't have the opportunity to take a long stride toward the pitcher in order to get your momentum forward. Take a small step as the pitcher delivers the pitch. Remember, the majority of your weight should be on your back leg before the pitch is thrown. After you swing the bat, the majority of your weight should be on your front leg. Do this with a small step that will trigger your swing.
Lock Your Elbows
As you make contact with the ball, lock your elbows. The timing of this move is essential. Do it too early and you will drag your bat through the hitting zone and not fire it. Do it too late and you will hit a weak grounder. Making sure you left arm is straight at the point the bat head meets the ball will give you a chance to be a much more powerful hitter.
