The fitness band, which comes in a variety of shapes, widths and lengths, is inexpensive, portable and versatile. It enables multi-directional, sport-specific movements, and provides resistance at both phases of the muscle contraction. The resistance band color indicates its level of resistance. Physical therapists prescribe light resistance band exercise for rehabilitation. Body builders use the heavy-duty resistance band in conjunction with dumbbells and barbells.
Resistance Levels
Resistance band manufacturers' color-coding is inconsistent, so be sure to check the specifications. Some companies sell sets of bands, at different resistances. These sets are economical, and provide a progressive workout. It is also possible to alter the resistance by shortening or lengthening the band. A shorter band provides more resistance, so move your stabilizing hand or foot closer to the middle to add challenge, or closer to the end to decrease resistance.
Band Shape
The fitness band is available in five different types. The Theraband is wide and flat. The jump rope shaped tubes have handles at each end. The ankle band comes in circular or figure eight forms. The power band is thick and heavy. When working barefoot, the Theraband is most comfortable underfoot. The tubing handles make it the most ergonomic choice for upper body exercise. Use the circular or figure eight ankle bands for side leg raises are hamstring curls, and the power band for weight training.
Attachments
Some companies sell attachment devices, which enable you to anchor the band to a stable object. These inexpensive devices protect the band's integrity, and increase your exercise options. Attach a band to stable object behind a stability ball, and add resistance to your exercise ball crunches.
Rotary Movement
Traditional weight training machines only provide linear movements. The band enables sport-specific rotary movement. Secure the band the a stable object, and perform exercises that simulate golf and tennis moves.
Cleaning and Storage
Clean the band with water and mild soap. Apply talcum powder, baby powder or cornstarch when it is dry. This keeps it from sticking together in humid weather.
