Hitting a baseball requires focus, technique and plenty of hand-eye coordination. Some hitters specialize in power hitting while other hitters do what it takes to advance the runner, such as putting down a well-placed bunt.
Be Well-Rounded
Everyone wants to hit that game-winning triple or knock one over the fence, but power hitting is just one aspect of hitting. There are situations where just advancing a runner to third base can make a big difference for your team, so practice all types of hitting because you never know when you'll be in a situation to need them. Practice pulling and pushing the ball. Being a versatile hitter will also make it harder for pitchers to exploit your weaknesses.
Focus on Fundamentals
Even the best major league players work on their fundamentals every day in batting practice. Proper hip rotation, hand placement and foot work are essential to making proper contact with the ball. Spend your time in batting practice focusing on these fundamental areas so that when you step up to the plate in a game, your muscle memory can kick in and you can focus on driving the ball where you need to.
Choose Your Bat
The bat you use can make the difference between hitting a home run and hitting it to the shortstop. If the bat is too heavy, you won't be able to get enough power on the ball. If your bat is too light, you're likely to swing too fast through the hitting zone and miss the sweet spot. Practice with a number of bats to get the feel for the one that's right for you.
Learn Your Pitch
Every hitter has a pitch or location they hit best. Whether it's a fastball, curveball or a change-up, find the pitch you hit best and recognize it when it comes off the pitcher's hand. Take advantage of pitches in your favorite area of the strike zone, whether it be high and tight or low and outside. Be patient at the plate and wait for your pitch if possible.
Work the Count
Patient hitters know how to use the count in their favor. Getting a pitcher to work through the count forces them to be selective in their pitches, which will make it more likely for you to see a pitch you like. Don't be afraid to let a strike go through the zone without swinging if you don't have any strikes on you. It might mean your favorite pitch is coming up next.
