Colon cancer refers to an overgrowth of cells that occurs in the lower intestine. These cells form tumors and are associated with such symptoms as rectal bleeding or bloody stool, fatigue or weakness, unintentional weight loss, cramps, gas and stomach pain. Chemotherapy drugs for colon cancers are often administered to treat this disease.
Capecitabine
Capecitabine, commonly sold as Xeloda, is a chemotherapy drug that specifically treats metastatic (spreading) colorectal cancer and metastatic breast cancer. MedlinePlus, a website of the National Institutes of Health, indicates that capecitabine is an antimetabolite medication that prevents the cancer cells from growing. Some of capecitabine's common side effects include constipation, weakness, vomiting, nausea, dehydration and itchy skin. Capecitabine's serious side effects include chest pain, sore throat, infection, fever, severe vomiting and poor appetite. Notify a doctor if capecitabine leads to these effects. Capecitabine is a tablet taken two times a day or as prescribed.
Irinotecan
Irinotecan, commonly sold as Camptosar, is another chemotherapy medication that halts the growth of colon cancer cells. Drugs.com says that irinotecan also treats rectal cancer. Its less serious side effects include cough, temporary hair loss, constipation, poor appetite, dizziness and redness or peeling of the hands or feet. Irinotecan's serious side effects include easy bleeding or bruising, chest pain, increased sweating, visual, speech or balance problems and black or bloody stools. In some instances, irinotecan leads to watery diarrhea, loose stools, headache and fainting. Call a doctor if irinotecan causes these effects. Irinotecan is an intravenous injection given every week or as prescribed.
Cetuximab
Cetuximab, commonly sold as Erbitux, is another chemotherapy medication that slows colon cancer progression. Drugs.com says that cetuximab also treats head, neck and rectal cancer. Its less serious side effects include a dry mouth, trouble swallowing, vomiting, stomach pain, a headache, weight loss and weakness. Some of cetuximab's serious side effects include easy bleeding or bruising, confusion, body aches, flu-like symptoms, chest pain, confusion and mouth or lip sores. Call a physician if cetuximab leads to these effects. Cetuximab is an intravenous injection given once a week.
