A cough may occur due to allergies, the common cold or flu, bronchitis, asthma, whooping cough, hay fever or croup. In rare cases, a cough may be the sign of a more serious condition, like lung cancer. If it is okay with your doctor, you can reduce the symptoms of your cough with a home remedy that contains honey.
Lemon and Honey
The Mayo Clinic recommends drinking a mixture of lemon and honey with hot water to help reduce the symptoms of a cough. The lemon and honey mixture may also help cut mucus in the back of the throat and soothe a sore throat. Pour hot water into a mug, then add 1 tsp. of lemon juice and 1 tsp. of honey. Add more of both lemon and honey to taste, if desired. Stir thoroughly, then sip the liquid when it is cool enough to drink. Slowly sip the mixture while inhaling the steam rising from the cup to help loosen any tightness in the chest.
Carrot Juice With Honey
Drink carrot juice and honey together to help reduce a cough, recommends Health 911. Mix honey with store-bought carrot juice or make your own carrot juice from scratch. Place three to five carrots in a juicer, then pour the carrot juice into a tall glass. In a separate glass, mix 2 tsp. honey with 2 tbsp. of water, then add to the carrot juice and mix thoroughly. Drink as needed throughout the day to help reduce a cough.
Pure Honey
Take 2 tsp. of honey at bedtime to help reduce night coughing, suggests the Mayo Clinic. Taking pure honey may help coat the throat and suppress coughing throughout the night. It may also help soothe a sore, raw throat due to coughing. Do not give honey to a child under the age of 1, because consuming honey can cause infant botulism, a form of food poisoning.
Aloe Vera and Honey
Purchase aloe vera juice at the grocery store or drugstore, then pour 2 tsp. of the liquid in a glass. Add 2 tsp. of honey and mix thoroughly, then drink the mixture. Aloe vera juice and honey may help soothe a dry, scratchy cough.
