Actos (generic name pioglitazone) is a prescription drug used to treat Type 2 diabetes. It was originally approved by the FDA in July, 1999. Actos is part of a group of drugs called thiazolidinediones, which act primarily by decreasing insulin resistance and helping insulin work better in muscle and fat. This drug is used alone or in combination with insulin or another antidiabetic medication.
Less Serious Side Effects
Some common side effects associated with taking Actos are mild and usually do not require medical attention. Included in these are cough, dry mouth, unusual breath odor, increased hunger or thirst, tooth problems, sore throat, flushed or dry skin, headache, increased urination, loss of consciousness, muscle pain and soreness, runny or stuffy nose, stomach problems, sweating, weight loss, and blurred vision. If any of these side effects do not go away or become annoying, they should be reported to a doctor or pharmacist.
Common Serious Side Effects
A number of more serious side effects may also be common when using Actos. If any of these are noted, notify your doctor immediately. These side effects include chest pain, dilated veins in the neck, irregular breathing, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, decreased urine output, extreme fatigue, weight gain or swelling of the face, fingers, feet or lower legs.
Less Common Serious Side Effects
Some serious side effects of Actos are less common. These may include unusual fatigue or weakness, unusual bruising or bleeding, pain or swelling in the arms or legs which is not associated with an injury, trouble breathing during activity, and pale skin. As with the more common serious side effects, contact a doctor if any of these occur.
Side Effects of Unknown Incidence
Several side effects have been noted for which incidence is unclear. These include yellowing of eyes or skin (related to liver problems), unexplained rapid weight gain, nausea or vomiting, darkening of urine, and severe stomach pain.
